Reps. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), and Doris Matsui (D-CA) have taken a step to broaden healthcare options for seniors by introducing the Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act. This legislation aims to improve healthcare outcomes, notably in rural areas where healthcare providers are fewer, by increasing the flexibility of pharmacists in treating common respiratory conditions.
Rep. Smith emphasized the value of this measure, stating, “Giving seniors more options to meet their healthcare needs is a valuable way to improve outcomes for patients.” He added that the involvement of pharmacists is essential, especially in areas with limited healthcare provider availability. He thanked his colleagues for partnering in this legislative effort.
Rep. Schneider highlighted the role pharmacists play in healthcare, noting their contribution to preventing infectious disease spread: “We need to empower pharmacists to continue providing care to seniors and receiving reimbursement for services.” He praised the collaboration within the initiative, mentioning his colleague, Congressman Adrian Smith.
Rep. Harshbarger expressed that the bipartisan legislation would modernize Medicare and enhance access to healthcare for seniors, particularly in underserved communities. Rep. Matsui emphasized the centrality of pharmacies in communities, stating that “pharmacists have stepped up to meet public health threats” and the legislation is necessary to ensure continued federal support.
The Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act proposes Medicare coverage for pharmacist-administered tests and treatments for respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 and influenza. The legislation would not override existing state laws on the practice scope of pharmacists, preserving their ability to provide these services as legally sanctioned.
The Future of Pharmacy Care Coalition, comprising several organizations including the American Pharmacists Association and Walgreens, has endorsed the bill. Their statement recognized the efforts of the Representatives and urged Congress to quickly pass the legislation to help seniors access necessary health services.
