Hastings Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is going swimmingly!

On June 1 the Summer Reading Program began at the Hastings Public Library. This year's theme is Oceans of Possibilities, has proven to be true. The number of patrons participating in the challenges and attending programs has surged in 2022 surpassing the past few years.

The Library had 263 patrons sign up for the program in 2021 and have already registered 570 for 2022. With only one week to go in June, readers are quickly approaching the halfway mark of 125,000 minutes read. The overall goal for the summer is have read at least 250,000 minutes across all four age groups. Participants can continue tracking their minutes read even after they have completed their reading challenges. It is this capability that will contribute to reaching its goal.

Library Director, Amy Dissmeyer said, “It's fantastic to see our community participating in summer reading again the way we have in years prior to the pandemic. Maintaining reading skills throughout the summer months is so important for a child's educational success and it's also a great way to bond as a family and a community.”

Hastings Public Library patrons aren’t only reading this summer but participating in learning challenges and in-person programs at the library. There have been four family events so far in June, with 413 patrons in attendance; averaging over 100 per program. The Bookmobile is greatly contributing by reaching out to families who may not be able to make it to the library. They are offering several story times in Bladen, Kenesaw, and Juniata parks as well as Lincoln and Libs parks in Hastings.

The Summer Reading Program has five weeks to go, and it is not too late to join! The program ends July 31st, but readers have until August 6th to finish up logging their progress before grand prizes are drawn August 8th. Patrons are encouraged to enroll in the program by visiting the library or downloading the free Beanstack app (hastingslibrary.beanstack.com) to begin tracking minutes read and learning challenges completed.
