MCC Volleyball wins sixth straight; tops Central CC

The McCook Community College volleyball team won its sixth-straight match Wednesday taking a 3-2 win at home over Central Community College.

"I thought we played well at times but struggled at other times," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

MCC won 25-19, 21-25, 25-9, 22-25 and 15-11 to improve to 3-0 in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference play.

"The biggest thing for us – and we've been working on it constantly and can't seem to get it – but we need to be much stronger the first five to 10 points of each set," Kobza said. "It seems like we're always playing catch up."

Sophomore Victoria Thomas (Houston, Texas) led MCC with 19 kills to go along with five assist blocks, nine digs and an ace. Fernanda Merancio (freshman, Lamar, Colo.) added 15 kills and two assist blocks.

Gabby Caskey (freshman, Ogallala) had 11 kills, nine digs, two assist blocks and one ace.

"We didn't have any one player who shined above the rest, but everybody contributed, and they all played great," Kobza said.

Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) had eight kills from the middle with three assist blocks and led MCC with four aces on the night. Gracen Tuttle (freshman, Ogallala) led MCC with seven assist blocks.

"We need to get our middles playing a little more aggressively so that they are a stronger option for us," Kobza said.

Jessie Jerome (freshman, Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 43 assists to go along with 10 kills, 15 digs, one ace, two solo blocks and one assist block.

Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy/ Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) had 14 digs and sophomore McKenna Crews (Loveland, Colo.) had 11 digs and an ace.

MCC improves to 11-5 and travels to Garden City Friday for a 6 p.m. match with the Broncbusters. The Kansas team is 14-4. MCC handed the Broncbusters one of their losses at the MCC tournament Sept. 3 winning 25-21, 25-23, 25-17.

"Another big game Friday. We need to focus on starting strong and playing consistent volleyball," Kobza said.

Central CC has lost six straight matches and fall to 6-13. The Raiders will visit North Platte Thursday.

MCC's next home match will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the team faces North Platte in NCCAC action.
