Monroe Leads Volleyball Past Mount Marty

The Hastings College volleyball team put on an impressive offensive performance on Wednesday night in its 25-10, 25-20, 19-25, 25-13 win over Mount Marty inside Lynn Farrell Arena.

The Lady Broncos went right to work on the Lancers scoring yes, the first 12 points of the match and it all started with Makenna Asher and Amani Monroe teaming up for a block to make it 1-0. Then one of Asher's career high five service aces made it 2-0. Then Asher went and did what she does best dishing out assists on the next three points connecting with Marlee Taylor, Peyton Roper and Taylor again for the quick 5-0 start.

Four more ace service aces, a kill from Taylor and two kills from Monroe made it 12-0 before MMU finally got a point which received an applause from our student section. Hastings went on to easily win set one 25-10 and hit a whopping .407.

And if you thought that was an impressive offensive performance, what Hastings did in set two was even more impressive. Leading 7-4, Hastings picked up kills from Dacey Sealey, Lauren Dirks and Taylor plus a solo block from Rachel Hefta to make it 11-4. The Lancer would hang around trailing just 13-10 but the offense revved things back up with an over pass that Monroe slammed home to make it 14-10. Another over pass on the next possession allowed Taylor to show off with a big kill to make it 15-10. Taylor picked up another kill off the Asher assists followed by a solo block by Roper and another kill from Taylor plus an attack error by MMU made it 19-10.

From there, Hastings easily won the set 25-20 as the story of set two was again the offense where HC hit an eye abashing .414 with 16 kills on 29 swings.

The match then kind of got turned on its head as head coach Alex Allard worked in some other players off the bench and Mount Marty was able to bounce back to win set three 25-19.

Coach Allard then switch back to her starting lineup and easily dismissed the Lancers from the get go scoring the first seven points of the frame. It started with one of Taylor's team high 12 kills and then Monroe took control at the net with three straight solo blocks to make it 4-0. Asher then went outside to Roper for back-to-back thunderous kills before ending the run by connecting with Monroe in the middle for the kill. The route was on as the Lady Broncos easily won set four 25-13.

For the match, Hastings hit .289 while the Lancers managed to hit just .077.

Monroe led the way with 14 kills while hitting .500 and recording 11 total blocks while Roper added nine kills hitting .217. Taylor finished with eight kills hitting .263 and Lemke finished with seven kills hitting .278 while only playing two sets. Asher led the team with 29 assists with Miriam Miller leading the way with 16 digs.

Hastings improves to 17-9 (6-5) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 15 as Morningside comes to town with first serve set for 5:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
