Men's Basketball Improves Win Streak to Eight Games

The Hastings College men's basketball team looked sharp early before Mount Marty made it a game for a while before pulling away for the 75-57 victory on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.

The Broncos jumped out to a rather quick 14 point lead forcing a Lancer timeout where their coach got a bit fiery and the pep talk worked as the Broncos went cold allowing MMU to go on a 14-2 run before Hastings held a 33-28 lead at halftime.

After a couple of Tash Lunday free throws began the scoring for Mount Marty to start the second half, Dawson Zenger made sure that would be as close as the Lancers would get draining a three for the six point lead. That lead then jumped to nine when Phil Cisrow connected from downtown.

The teams would trade baskets and the lead hit double figures again when Karson Gansebom jumped in front of an in bound pass and then took it coast-to-coast for the 44-33 lead with 13:35 to play.

The Lancers fought back to with in eight but and Anthony Thompson layup followed by a Tyrique McMurrin layup pushed the lead to 12 at 50-38 with 11:02 remaining.

Mount Marty got the lead down to single digits just one more time as the Broncos built a lead as large as 23 before winning 75-57.

Reggie Thomas led the way with 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting while going 9-for-11 from the charity stripe. He pulled down seven boards while dishing out five assists. Tyrique McMurrin had a career high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting while pulling down a team high eight rebounds.

Gansebom finished with nine points with Cisrow adding eight, Thompson finished with seven and Zenger added six.

Hastings finished the game shooting nearly 53 percent (27-for-51) and that was after dropping down to 41 percent early in the second half. The Broncos were also 40 percent (8-for-20) from behind the arc while holding the Lancers to just 34.7 percent (17-for-49) from the floor.

For the seventh straight game, the Broncos won the rebounding battle 33-to-28. Hastings also dished out 16 assists compared to just four for MMU.

Hastings improves to 7-0 (2-0) on the year and will be back in action Monday Nov. 22 as Dakota State comes to town with tipoff set for 7:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
