North Denver Station No. 4 electrical generation unit is scheduled for its summer run the week of June 18.

Starting the evening of Sunday, June 18 there will be steam and some sound emitting from the NDS site at 1228 N. Denver Ave., that may seem unusual to nearby residents. As the unit is brought online, additional steam and sounds will emit from the unit June 19 to 22 during daylight hours.

Hastings Utilities plans on running NDS 5, also at 1228 N. Denver Ave., for a few days sometime between mid-July to early August, pending completion repairs of the cooling tower next to North Denver Station.

NDS 4 is capable of generating 15.5 megawatts per hour. This is equivalent to about 20,785 horsepower.

NDS 5 is capable of generating 23.6 MW/hr.

Both NDS units are capable of firing with natural gas or fuel oil with natural gas being the preferred fuel source.

Running the NDS units annually proves their capacity and provides a financial benefit to Hastings Utilities rate payers through reliability and additional capacity.

NDS 4 and NDS 5 operated continuously from their completion in the 1950s until the 77 MW Whelan Energy Center No. 1, east of Hastings, was operational in 1981. The NDS units have been in intermittent and reserve status since then.
