Hastings Parks and Recreation is still in the investigative phase when it comes to repairing and reopening the lazy river at the Hastings Aquacourt Water Park.

The lazy river began losing water late on June 6. Parks and Recreation Department staff members were adding 20,000 gallons of water per day to the lazy river from June 7 until the decision was made to close the feature on June 12. That replacement amount represents 10% of the 200,000-gallon total within the lazy river.

With the help of a camera belonging to Hastings Utilities’ water department, Parks and Recreation Department staff members are trying to locate the exact area where water leaking.

Once the leak is found, potential options include a quicker, temporary repair of a patch on the crack to keep the lazy river opened throughout the summer, with a more extensive repair of pipe replacement to occur in the offseason; or the more extensive repair, replacing the damaged pipe, to occur now.

The layout and location of the lazy river adds to the difficulty of repairs.

The lazy river is required to circulate water to stay open to ensure the chemical level remains balanced.

The lazy river had also been home to “water walking” allowing patrons to walk against the current in the river before and after normal operating hours.

With the lazy river closed, water walking is now taking place in the first three south lap lanes until the river is back up and running. Walking is the lap swim area occurs 11-11:45 a.m. daily, plus 7-8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The Hastings Aquacourt Water Park is open seven days-a-week, noon to 7 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through mid-August.
