Washington, D.C. – Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) released a statement following the Biden administration's executive order suspending the admittance of illegal immigrants seeking asylum at the southern border. The suspension will take effect upon recording a 7-day average of 2,500 illegal crossings.

"Pres. Biden’s border announcement confirms what House Republicans have been saying since we passed H.R. 2: the President can and must do more to enforce our laws and secure the border," Smith stated. He added, "Biden's response to this crisis has been feckless, and this order is too little, too late."

Smith emphasized that there are proper and improper ways to apply for asylum, stating that "illegally crossing our border between ports of entry is always the incorrect way." He further called for more stringent measures, suggesting that serious action would include resuming wall construction, reinstating the Remain in Mexico policy, and ending catch-and-release practices.

"Telling illegal crossers that what they are doing is just fine as long as we don’t exceed 900,000 of them in a year is not serious," Smith concluded.
