Washington, D.C. – Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee's Trade Subcommittee, issued a statement regarding United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai's request for dispute settlement consultations with Canada over its new tax on digital services under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“This action by USTR is welcome news. In July, I made a call with Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith and Committee Republicans for a quick and decisive response to Canada’s digital services tax. This policy unfairly targets American businesses and reneges on its USMCA commitments. The Biden-Harris administration’s retreat from defending American trade interests has invited belligerence toward our world-leading industries. Protecting innovation and productivity demands aggressive action. I urge President Biden to stand up for American workers and job creators and will continue to closely follow this dispute process.”
