Today, Congressman Adrian Smith from Nebraska issued a statement regarding the White House's recent event with selected agriculture groups. Smith criticized the Biden-Harris administration for what he perceives as a lack of alignment between their actions and their stated support for American agriculture producers.
Smith highlighted several issues, including the administration's reluctance to open new markets through trade agreements, which he claims has resulted in an agricultural trade deficit exceeding $30 billion. He also pointed out the administration's failure to address unscientific protectionism, specifically mentioning the prolonged Mexican ban on American white corn.
Furthermore, Smith expressed concern over the lack of leadership in renewing the Farm Bill, which he says leaves producers without certainty. He criticized the Treasury Department for not releasing biofuel tax credit guidance promptly and for not fully incorporating GREET scientific standards for renewable fuels. This situation, according to Smith, creates uncertainty across supply chains and excludes long-time producers who have been good stewards of their land.
Additionally, Smith took issue with the revival of the Obama-era WOTUS rule by the current administration. He argues that this puts farmers and ranchers at risk of undue regulation by the EPA, contrary to congressional intent.
Smith concluded his statement by emphasizing that true support for American agriculture involves empowering producers to feed both local communities and global markets now and in future generations. He expressed skepticism about President Biden and Vice President Harris's understanding of these needs.
