Today, Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) issued a statement concerning reports that the Office of the United States Trade Representative is working to renegotiate parts of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement. The reports suggest these efforts are being made without consulting Congress or American industry stakeholders.
Rep. Smith expressed his concerns, stating, "I am extremely troubled by reports the lame duck Biden-Harris administration is attempting to bypass Congress to alter USMCA and the U.S.-Colombia agreement." He criticized President Biden and Ambassador Tai for not taking action over the past four years to support American producers and consumers.
Smith urged the USTR to involve stakeholders and consult with Congress regarding any negotiations related to these trade agreements. He also called for a response to a letter he sent three months ago with nine colleagues, emphasizing accountability for Mexico's obligations under USMCA.
