Today, Representatives Adrian Smith of Nebraska and Nathaniel Moran of Texas introduced the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act. The proposed legislation aims to prevent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from using funds from an $80 billion allocation by the Biden-Harris administration to increase audits on middle-class families. Instead, it seeks to preserve funding for customer service and IT modernization at the IRS.
Representative Smith criticized previous efforts to expand IRS enforcement, stating, "In their 2022 Inflation Act spending spree, Democrats attempted to supersize the IRS with 87,000 new enforcement agents. Since then, TIGTA has reported the IRS has struggled to find new hires, targeted middle-class families with the majority of new audits, and neglected to update its own antiquated technology." He emphasized that a focus on serving Americans is needed rather than increasing taxpayer dollars for enforcement.
Representative Moran expressed his support for the bill by saying, “Families and small businesses have suffered enough under burdensome IRS regulations. I'm proud to join Congressman Adrian Smith in introducing the Family and Small Business Act. This bill will protect middle-class families from audits they cannot afford and prevent the IRS from using its massive infusion of taxpayer dollars to harass and squeeze more revenue out of American families and small businesses.”
The bill has garnered additional support from several cosponsors including Representatives Don Bacon (R-NE), Mike Bost (R-IL), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Kat Cammack (R-FL), Ben Cline (R-VA), Carol Miller (R-WV), Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Jake Ellzey (R-TX), Ron Estes (R-KS), Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Brad Finstad (R-MN), Russ Fulcher (R-ID), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Michael Guest (R-MS), Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Nick Langworthy (R-NY), Julia Letlow (R-LA), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Dan Meuser (R-PA), Mike Kelly (R-PA), John Moolenaar(R-MI ), Greg Murphy(R-NC ), Guy Reschenthaler(R-PA ), Maria Salazar(R-FL ), Pete Stauber(R-MN ), Claudia Tenney(R-NY ), and Beth Van Duyne(R-TX ).
