Nebraska delegation honors late representatives with post office and federal building naming

Reps. Adrian Smith and Sen. Pete Ricketts, along with Sen. Deb Fischer and Reps. Don Bacon and Mike Flood, have announced the enactment of legislation honoring former Nebraska Congress members Bill Barrett and Virginia Smith. The legislation designates the Post Office in Lexington, NE, to honor Bill Barrett and his wife Elsie, while the North Platte Federal Building will be named after Virginia Smith.

Rep. Smith praised Virginia Smith's dedication to agriculture and her service in Congress for 16 years, stating: “Virginia Smith spent her life applying an exemplary work ethic to advancing agriculture and Nebraska priorities.” He also highlighted Bill Barrett's contributions as a veteran, educator, and legislator.

Sen. Ricketts emphasized their commitment to serving Nebraskans: “Virginia Smith tirelessly advocated for Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers...Bill Barrett always put his constituents first.” He expressed gratitude towards President Biden for recognizing these public servants.

Sen. Fischer remarked on Virginia Smith as an agriculture advocate and political trailblazer: “As an agriculture advocate and political trailblazer, Virginia Smith’s legacy will live on in Nebraska’s history books.” She acknowledged Bill Barrett's dedication alongside his wife Elsie.

Rep. Bacon commented on their unwavering service: “Bill Barrett faithfully served the Great State of Nebraska first in the Navy...as a Member of Congress." He noted Virginia Smith's role as Nebraska’s first female House member.

Rep Flood recognized their impact on the Third District: "From the Navy to the Unicameral to the halls of Congress, Bill Barrett’s life was devoted to public service."

The legislation was signed into law by President Biden.
