Representative Adrian Smith, along with other Nebraska congressional delegation members, has reached out to President Donald Trump regarding concerns over the United States Postal Service (USPS) mail delivery in rural areas. The letter, co-signed by Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts and Representatives Don Bacon and Mike Flood, emphasizes the importance of filling vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors with individuals who can address these issues.
The letter highlights a legal obligation for USPS to provide universal service. It notes that under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's leadership, the agency has faced significant budget deficits and declining on-time delivery performance. The representatives express particular concern about the impact on rural communities, which they describe as "the backbone of our great nation." They argue that consolidation of facilities has led to increased delays, forcing residents to rely on private services.
The delegation urges President Trump to appoint board members committed to solving these challenges and ensuring quality service for all Americans. They stress that such personnel decisions are crucial for restoring public trust in USPS.
Earlier communications between Smith and DeJoy included a February 2024 letter addressing proposed changes at the North Platte Mail Processing and Distribution Center. In response, DeJoy agreed to delay these changes until 2025.
