Today, Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee's Trade Subcommittee, expressed his views following President Trump's executive order. The order directs the United States Trade Representative to take action aimed at leveling the playing field for American businesses in the international digital marketplace.
Smith stated, "President Trump’s aggressive engagement is critical for American companies to get a fair deal." He criticized the previous administration by saying, "Abdication on digital trade policy by the Biden-Harris administration left U.S. businesses without an advocate when unfairly targeted by foreign governments and ceded leadership to the Chinese Communist Party." According to Smith, discriminatory tariffs on American digital products have negatively impacted competitiveness and put intellectual property at risk. He emphasized that "to continue leading the world in innovation, we must compete on equal footing with our trade partners."
Smith has consistently urged previous administrations to address unfair practices from trade partners such as Canada's tax on digital services.
