Washington, DC — Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) issued a statement in response to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) announcement of new actions aimed at boosting American energy production. The EPA plans to reconsider the tailpipe emissions rule and the "Clean Power Plan 2.0" concerning power plant production.
Smith expressed his support for President Trump and Administrator Zeldin's efforts to reduce restrictions on energy production. He criticized the Biden administration's policies, particularly those affecting rural areas such as Nebraska's Third District. "I appreciate President Trump and Administrator Zeldin's bold and decisive action to rollback barriers to American energy abundance," Smith stated.
He highlighted concerns about reliance on supply chains controlled by foreign entities, specifically mentioning China. Smith noted that mandates like the electric vehicle (EV) adoption requirement were impractical for rural Americans. "Options, not mandates, bring the best outcomes," he added.
The representative also addressed issues related to power plant regulations under the Biden administration, arguing that they compromised grid reliability and economic growth. "Nearly half of Nebraska's electricity comes from coal, including the power supplying our EV charging stations," Smith pointed out.
In February 2024, Rep. Smith had joined other lawmakers in urging President Biden to reconsider what they viewed as impractical EPA rules affecting tailpipe emissions.
