Congressional Biofuels Caucus Co-chair Adrian Smith and Senator Deb Fischer, both from Nebraska, recently held a press conference to discuss support for legislative action on ethanol blends. They were joined by other members of Congress and Kenneth Hartman Jr., President of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA). The focus was on a letter sent by nearly 9,000 corn producers to congressional leadership advocating for year-round access to E15, an ethanol blend.
Rep. Smith highlighted the challenges faced by agricultural producers due to high fuel prices and regulatory barriers. He stated that lifting restrictions on E15 could significantly boost the U.S. economy and create jobs. "It was President Trump’s first administration which paved the way for summertime sales," he said, emphasizing the need for market certainty through legislation.
Senator Fischer urged Congress to pass the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act of 2025, aligning with President Trump's earlier commitments. She noted that this move would benefit consumers and various stakeholders in the petroleum and retail sectors.
Kenneth Hartman Jr., representing corn growers, expressed that increasing domestic demand for corn is crucial amid foreign market uncertainties. He called on Congress to address this issue promptly.
Rep. Mike Flood mentioned President Trump's efforts in allowing year-round E15 sales in Midwestern states and advocated for nationwide implementation. He stressed that such a step would bolster rural economies.
Joshua Shields from POET, a major biofuel producer, supported the initiative, stating it would enhance energy independence and reduce fuel costs.
Smith and Fischer had introduced relevant legislation on February 13 aimed at enabling year-round sales of E15 across the nation.
