Today, Representative Adrian Smith of Nebraska expressed his views following President Trump's recent executive order. The order directs the Secretary of Education to begin steps towards closing the federal Department of Education.
Smith stated, "We owe it to American students to examine whether they are better off since the Department of Education's inception more than a half-century ago." He highlighted concerns over increased federal spending and declining student proficiencies and department staffing since 2000. According to Smith, "It's clear such ineffectiveness is not worth such a monumental expense."
He emphasized that parents should have a greater influence in educational matters, suggesting that education should be managed at the state level rather than federally. "Parents deserve a greater voice in the classroom, and the federal government should return this issue to the states," he added.
The discussion comes amid broader debates on education policy and federal versus state control over educational systems.
