Washington, DC — Representative Adrian Smith, chair of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, commented on President Donald Trump's recent action regarding trade tariffs. President Trump declared a national emergency due to unfair foreign trade practices and introduced a reciprocal tariff system.

Smith emphasized the importance of reducing trade barriers for American businesses. He stated, "Reducing trade barriers is necessary to ensuring American farmers, ranchers, manufacturers, small businesses, and innovators can sell their products in other markets." According to Smith, President Trump has made it clear that countries could prevent tariffs by lowering or eliminating barriers to U.S. products.

Smith also mentioned Trump's previous term, noting, "In his first term, President Trump proved robust engagement can be productive as he moved the ball down the field on several agreements with our top trade partners." He stressed the necessity of continuing to fight for economic stability and the opportunity for U.S. workers in the global market. "To achieve economic stability, we must continue to fight to give our producers the chance to compete in a global marketplace," Smith added.
