Today, Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE) of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee released a statement regarding the recent progress in U.S.-India trade talks. The statement comes following the announcement by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Terms of Reference for negotiating a trade agreement have been finalized.
Smith highlighted India's growing economy and population as key reasons for strengthening the trading and strategic partnership. He stated, "With one of the world’s fastest growing economies and largest populations, improving our trading and strategic partnership with India is vital to the economic and security needs of both our nations."
He further appreciated the contributions of key players in the negotiations, noting, "A bilateral trade agreement which will grow cooperation and reduce barriers to trade is important, and I appreciate the work of President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Prime Minister Modi in achieving this step forward." Smith also emphasized the importance of including science-based standards and expanding markets for various American sectors as the Trump administration continues its work.
In addition, Smith addressed a separate somber event in India, expressing his condolences by saying, “I would be remiss to not also recognize the tragedy in Kashmir which occurred today. My prayers are with the Indian people as they grieve those lost and as their authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
