Pavement Management Services

The City of Grand Island Public Works Department continues to evaluate and maintain our existing roadway network. Public Works Department has begun the process of updating its pavement management system, and one of the most important parts of that is collecting updated pavement condition data. Pavement assets are one of the most valuable assets the City manages. This data goes into the City’s Cartegraph pavement management system and supports analyses of future funding needs and work planning. The roadway condition assessment data is needed for GASB 34 reporting and the City’s annual financial audits.

The City has contracted with Applied Pavement Technology, Inc. (APTech) to use advanced pavement testing tools to perform the pavement condition assessment and inspection work during spring 2022. The City will use this data to identify the streets most in need of repairs and develop multi-year maintenance and rehabilitation plans.

“Roadways are one of the most valuable assets a city maintains, and APTech is proud to help the City of Grand Island proactively protect them,” said Mark Gardner, Program Director with APTech. “Our team has more than twenty years of experience, and in that time has assessed thousands of miles of city and county streets. We use state-of-the-art equipment to safely assess roadway conditions without any impact to the driving public. We look forward to using that equipment and expertise to help the City improve its pavement management and preservation programs and refine its decision-making processes. Our goal is to help our clients provide the best driving conditions possible with the resources available.”

Citizens can expect to see an APTech van equipped with specialized technology traveling the city streets. The van is collecting information about street conditions. APTech’s van will follow all posted traffic signs and display a warning beacon so drivers and pedestrians do not encounter any driving impacts.

The data collection project is scheduled to begin the week of April 18th. On November 23, 2021, City Council awarded the contract to Applied Pavement Technology, Inc. of Urbana, Illinois for $136,655.00. For more information on the project contact Public Works at 308-385-5455.
