Hastings Fire & Rescue held its official Pizza Party with Keyla, a local fourth grader, and her family on November 7th. Keyla took the time to enter the Fire Prevention Month challenge in October. She discussed fire safety and created an escape plan with her family.
Keyla drew her family's escape plan and submitted the drawing to Hastings Fire & Rescue. Her name was drawn from the submitted entries and her family spent an evening with the Fire Department at Station 2. The evening included a Pizza Party for Keyla's family, conversation and a tour of the Fire Station.
Hastings Fire & Rescue thanks everyone who participated in this challenge, and encourages members of the community to continue having discussions about fire safety and escape plans in your home.
CREATE YOUR OWN FIRE ESCAPE PLAN:
- Draw a map of your home showing all doors and windows.
- Visit each room and find 2 ways out.
- Check all windows and doors--they should open easily and be able to use them to get outside.
- Make sure your home has smoke alarms and test them.
- Pick a meeting place outside.
- Make sure your house number is visible from the street.
- Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
- Make sure everyone in your home knows how to dial 911.
- Practice your home fire drill.
