Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) released a statement following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the precedent set by the 1984 case Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, which had favored the regulatory power of federal agencies.
"The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of government accountability and the right of the American people to check abusive overreach in the Executive Branch. Under the Chevron doctrine, out-of-touch agencies in Washington such as the EPA have extended their reach into the lives and livelihoods of Americans with unconstitutional statutory force. This decision rightfully reaffirms the legislative authority of Congress, whose members are more appropriately accountable to citizens, and reflects the Judiciary Branch’s constitutional duty to interpret the law," stated Rep. Smith.
